The ProTaper Ultimate system has three (3) FINISHERS in the core set of files. Specifically, the files are termed F1, F2, and F3, which have D0 diameters and fixed apical one-third tapers between D1-3 of 20/07, 25/08, and 30/09, respectively, and yellow, red, and blue silicone stops and identifications rings on the handles, respectively. Unlike the increasing percentage tapered design of the SLIDER and SHAPER, the three FINISHERS have progressively decreasing percentage tapers, or regressive tapers, from D4 to D16. This design feature significantly improves flexibility, decreases the potential for dangerous taper lock, and respects the concept of MIE.
The “Finishing Criteria” is fulfilled and the shape is confirmed when the most apical flutes of any given Ultimate Finishing file are fully loaded with dentin. However, upon removing any given FINISHER, the clinician may observe the apical flutes are partially loaded or not loaded at all. In these instances, the clinician would generally proceed to the next sequential FINISHER.
